Most babies have a moderate amount of gassiness. Remember their GI system is still maturing. If a baby burps well and passes gas easily, there is no problem. Inform the doctor if the baby appears to be having a lot of stomach cramps and crying due to gas. Breastfed babies who are gassy may improve by making sure to empty the first breast completely before offering the second side. This way they get a higher percentage of hindmilk. Hindmilk has higher fat content with less lactose. Sometimes high lactose containing milk causes bloating and gas. Ask the doctor before making too many changes to your own diet in an attempt to decrease baby’s gassiness.
Maneuvers to assist your infant in passing gas include gently lying the baby on his/her back and gently massaging the abdomen in a clockwise fashion. You may also “bicycle” the infants legs. If fussiness persists gently massaging the anus with a baby wipe may also assist the infant in passing gas. If infant is persistently fussy, please call our office.
