We often hear parents express concerns about how to engage their children in activities other than smart phones, video games and TV. Screen-Free Week offers support for this. In 2017, Screen-Free Week is May 1-7. It also corresponds with Children’s Book Week.
The AAP supports this event and encourages parents to create a Family Media Plan at HeatlhyChildren.Org. This Media Plan can be used all year round to support your child’s health and well-being. The plan can be customized for each child in your family. It is designed to include measures for:
- Screen Free Zones
- Screen Free Times
- Device Curfews
- Choosing and Diversifying Media
- Balancing Online and Off-line Time
- Manners Matter
- Digital Citizenship
- Safety First
- Sleep & Exercise
Screenfree.org offers other resources that support spending free time playing, daydreaming, creating, exploring and connecting with family and friends. See what you discover as a family by adopting screen free time on a regular basis.
